Orangutan's plight

Reading my ritual Sunday paper, I came across an article that really troubled and disturbed me and I wanted to share it with you.

In a village in Borneo an Orangutan was killed by a frenzied mob for scavenging for food for her four month malnourished daughter. The family came to the village because their natural rainforest environment has been decimated by palm oil cultivation. So basically the people destroyed their home and when they come to the village to find food was tortured and punished for it.

What upset me more about this killing was the way the Orangutan was brutally killed in front of her child. The male Orangutan tried to protect them but the crowd chased him off. They attacked the mother with sticks until she fell on the ground, then they tied her arms and legs with rope. As the mob tried to drag her off she fought back to save her screeching baby. So villagers threw a net over them, wrenched the baby off her mother and tied her up too. Then they threw the mother into a swimming pool and held her under until she passed out. They then put her in a makeshift cage, where she was just about alive and threw her baby in with her. The crowd then grew restless and began throwing stones at them. It was only when a charity worker from International Animal Rescue came that the torture ended for these rare animals. They were taken to get medical treatment but only the baby called Peni survived.

Peni is nine months old and still recovering from this ordeal and it's unclear yet whether she will be able to cope in the wild if released.

There are only 80,000 Orangutans worldwide and they predict that by 2050 they will be extinct.

I wanted to raise this issue and ask they we donate as much as we can to such an important charity that helps those that can not help themselves. Please call 01825 767688 to donate or at least check their website out to see what these amazing people are doing. www.internationalanimalrescue.org
